As a young boy, as with many young boys, I loved to take things apart and rebuild them. For me it all started with bmx bikes, and then soon after, skateboards. With skateboarding, along came the need, and desire to build ramps and other obstacles to learn more tricks. My friends and I would search our neighborhood for any scrap wood we could find, and borrow whatever tools we could from our fathers, uncles, etc. Although these scrap wood ramps wouldn’t be perfect, they did the job. As the skateboarding progressed, so did the ramps that were built. They were still usually made from scrap wood, but built stronger, and more functional to keep up with the sport that my friends and I loved.
As I grew older and had to deal with more responsibilities, the skateboarding part of my life had come to an end. However, the basic woodworking skills I learned stuck with me through the years. When starting college I had little money to furnish my apartment, so I bought some basic tools and whatever lumber I could afford and I got to work. I soon had a platform bed, a computer desk, and a small dresser. These pieces weren’t in any way special, but they were functional, so that was ok with me.
After finishing college and buying my first home, I soon realized that I’m gonna need a lot more furniture. I went from big-box furniture stores to department store furniture showrooms looking for just the right pieces to fill my new home. A bought a sofa from here, and a lounge chair from there. However, I needed much more and there was nothing that I really loved enough or else the size wasn’t right. I not only wanted furniture that would last and was functional, but most importantly, furniture that nobody else would have. I soon realized that there’s only one way around this, and that is to build what I wanted. My evenings and weekends soon became consumed with creating specific pieces for specific places in my home. During this process I would occasionally share pictures of my work with friends and family. Almost immediately after, I began to get requests for custom furniture pieces. Before I knew it, I soon had more projects to build than I had time to build them. I had to make a life-changing decision.
With the advice and support from family and other loved ones, the decision became simple. It was time to take the plunge and try a new career path. I realized that it wouldn’t be easy, but the idea was exciting enough that I knew it had to happen.
So in April of 2015, my wife, Denise, and I founded REclUSE. Not only was it a name that perfectly suited our goal of crafting furniture for people that love to be home, but also incIuded "RE USE" for the love of using reclaimed and upcycled materials in many projects. I would design and build, and she would stain and finish. She was not only my helper, but more importantly, she was my biggest fan and critic. With her great attention to detail, she would define the quality that our clients came to love and expect. Unfortunately for the world, Denise had since passed away. However, the quality and attention to detail lives on through her as I continue designing and crafting one of a kind furniture for interior designers, corporations, and/or anybody with a home.
